Frequently Asked Questions
SHOULD I HAVE MY CHAIR REFINISHED? By all means have it refinished if you wish. This should be done prior to having a new seat woven and the old seat should be removed for this purpose, but first take photos of your old seat to share with me if you wish for your new seat to be woven in a similar manner as the old seat.
MAY I STAND ON MY CHAIR? Never EVER stand on a woven seat!
MY CHAIR HAS A WOVEN SEAT AND BACK. MAY I JUST HAVE THE SEAT REPLACED? As I mentioned on the page for hand-woven cane, you may have just the seat rewoven if you wish, but please remember that cane darkens as it ages and your new cane seat will be much lighter in color than the aged cane in the back of the chair. A blending stain can be used on the seat to make it match the color of the back, but the discerning eye can see the difference between the new stained seat and the naturally aged cane in the back. There are no guarantees that the stain on the seat won't rub off on clothing, particularly if the clothing is damp such as from perspiration. A finish can be added to the stained seat by the client if you wish to seal the stain onto the seat, but this isn't something I recommend nor perform since it causes the new cane seat to be brittle and reduces the life of the seat.
DO YOU PICK UP AND DELIVER? I will pickup and deliver within Titusville, FL, for free and will also pickup and deliver within a reasonable distance (25-mile radius) for a fee.
MAY I SHIP MY CHAIR TO YOU FOR WEAVING? I'm delighted to accomodate this provided the shipping both to and from is paid by the client.
WHAT IS THE PRICE FOR WEAVING MY CHAIR? Labor and materials are always subject to change, so please inquire at the time you request my service.
HOW SOON WILL MY CHAIR BE FINISHED? I don't order materials in advance because it can become brittle with age and impossible for weaving. The materials are ordered when my services are requested and they typically take about a week to arrive. Once the materials are here, it normally takes a day or two to weave your new seat. The hand-woven cane seats in the Star, Lace, and Spider Web patterns are VERY time-consuming and will take much longer. All this is dependent, of course, on the honey-do list my sweet wife has for me.
FROM WHAT ARE THE WEAVING MATERIALS MADE? Cane and reed both come from the rattan plant that grows wild in long vines on the forest floors of Indochina. Cane is the outer bark while reed is the inner material of the vine. Fibre rush and Danish cord are both made from twisted paper and yet is a very strong material. Shaker tape is 100% cotton that is best described as a cotton web strap.
